Mama Does Time by Deborah Sharp

December 1, 2008 by Richard Roffman

Mama is a true Southern gal: Impeccable manners, sherbet-colored pantsuits, and four previous marriages. She can serve sweet tea and sidestep alligator attacks with equal aplomb. Her antics – especially her penchant for finding trouble – drive her daughters Mace, Maddie, and Marty to distraction.

One night, while settling in to look for ex-beaus on TV’s “Cops, Mace gets a frantic call. This time, Mama’s in trouble’s for real: She found a body in the trunk of her turquoise convertible and the police think she’s the killer. It doesn’t help that the hunky Miami transplant assigned to investigate seems determined to prove Mama’s guilt, or that the cowboy who broke Mace’s heart shows up at the local Booze ‘n’ Breeze in the midst of the case. Unless Mace and her sisters can find the real culprit, their mama goes to prison – just like an embarrassing lyric from a country-western song.

About the Author, Deborah Sharp

deborah_sharpFlorida native Deborah Sharp is a former reporter for USA Today. Given all the stories she wrote about killer sharks, rampaging alligators, and human evil-doers, it’s a wonder she ever leaves the house.

Deborah quit journalism at age 50 to write mysteries. “Mama Does Time” is the debut in her funny, Florida-set series. Think Carl Hiaasen on estrogen, set in the rodeo-and-ranches slice of the state.  To create her setting of Himmarshee, Deborah borrowed from present-day Okeechobee, and from the South Florida of her youth. When Deborah was a girl, she rode her horse not far from Fort Lauderdale, over land dotted then with citrus groves and ranches. Now, it’s all interstates and strip malls.

Deborah’s award-winning short fiction and essays on lifestyle, writing, and women‘s topics have appeared nationally. She’s also a regular humor commentator for WUSF-FM in Tampa. She appeared on Election Day on the Today show, interviewed about “Mama” by Al Roker.

She lives in south Florida with her husband of 20 years, NBC reporter Kerry Sanders. No kids. No pets. They had goldfish once. Turned out badly. Click here to Visit her website .
